Only One Thing Is Needed

Only One Thing Is Needed: Choosing What Matters Most

Scripture: Luke 10:42 (ESV) “but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

This past Sunday, we reflected on the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38–42 and a powerful reminder: In the busyness of life, we must never lose sight of what matters most—our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Martha was busy serving Jesus, while Mary chose to sit at His feet and listen. Martha's intentions were good, but her responsibilities had become a distraction.

Not every distraction is something bad. Sometimes it's something good that's taken the wrong place in our lives.

During the message, the empty chair reminded us of the intentional time we often neglect to spend with Jesus through prayer and His Word. How often do we give our best attention to everything else and offer Jesus whatever is left?

God isn't asking us to abandon our responsibilities. He's inviting us to keep Him at the center of them.

We need Mary's heart while carrying out Martha's responsibilities.

A New Season for Freedom Chapel

Sunday also marked our final worship service in our current sanctuary. As we prepare to worship in our new location, we thank God for His faithfulness and the memories we've shared.

Our location may change, but our mission remains the same. May we never become so busy preparing our new space that we forget the One we are serving.

This Week's Challenge

Remember the empty chair and the choice it represents: Make room for Jesus.

Set aside intentional time each day to read Scripture, pray, and seek His wisdom.

Reflection: What is one thing you can change this week to make more room for Jesus in your life?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us recognize the distractions that pull us away from You. Give us hearts like Mary's, eager to listen and learn, while faithfully fulfilling our responsibilities. As Freedom Chapel enters a new season, help us keep Jesus at the center of everything we do. In Jesus' name, amen.

“Don't become so busy doing things for Jesus that you forget to spend time with Jesus.”
